Rafting in Åre guarantees memories for a lifetime, regardless of pace, difficulty level and preferences. Åre and its surroundings are full of skilled guides who know every bend, curve and eddy in our beautiful rapids. They will lead you through the beautiful art of rafting, in raft or kayak, on river boards and duckies, in and near Åre. Welcome to your next adventure!
Traditionally, we think of kayaks and rubber rafts when river rafting is mentioned, but there are alternatives and you can also choose the level of difficulty of your wet adventure. For groups of friends and colleagues or families, the rubber raft brings a fun challenge where co-operation is of the essence, while the river kayak is more of a one-person experience. Duckies or riverboards means more play and (maybe) less falls. Either way, there’s plenty to choose from. Let us guide you through the menu.
This requires co-operation. The rapids in Åre are filled to the brim with melting water and your common task is to paddle through, over and by eddys and drops. Your guide will, with a steady hand, take you through fast-flowing rapids and smaller and larger water falls. This activity suits most people, regardless of prior knowledge and comfort zones. Accept the challenge and create memories for life together with family, colleagues or friends.
Kayaks come in a large number of varying shapes and sizes. The white water kayak is, simply explained, a shorter and rounder cousin of the long and narrow model made for taking on ocean waves. The white water kayak is slower on still waters but its shape makes it easy to navigate in white water rapids, hence the name. You will be alone in your kayak but, of course, you want to share this experience with friends or family. Explore the rapids with a guided tour, or take a course or two that will help you master the Jamtlandic waters.
Ducky what? It’s a thing, a fun thing. A ducky is a two-person inflatable raft and guaranteed fun for the family, or why not at a hen or stag party activity. As we say in Sweden, “a dear child has many names”, and thus, the Riverboarding is also known as hydrospeed or white-water sledging. You’ll place your torso on a floating board and navigate through the water with your fin-clad feet. Equipment also includes wet suit, life jacket, helmet, fins and, sometimes, knee and elbow protection.
Paddling a ducky is great fun – get in and get wet!
Our activity companies offer both excursions and courses in different waters in Åre. Below are the three main rapids used for white water rafting near Åre village, from the easier Tångböleströmmarna to Vålån, which is one of Sweden’s toughest white water rapids.
Graded 1-3, easy to medium difficulty
20 May – September
Tångböleströmmarna suits most people, not least the family as it’s graded from easy to medium difficulty. Your tour usually starts in Lake Ånn and continues along Indalsälven. The stretch has three rapids of which the last is three kilometer long. This demands less physical capacity than the other two.
Graded 1-4, advanced
15 July – 31 September
This tour is guaranteed to get you wet as it offers both steep and technical passages. Storfallet, with a six metre drop, is included. This is one of Sweden’s toughest rapids where it’s possible to use a white water rubber raft and will boost your adrenaline and make you laugh. Demands decent physical capacity.
Graded 1-4, advanced
20 May – 15 July
This stretch is rough. It’s part of one of the steepest rapids where it’s still possible to use a white water rubber raft in Sweden. It’s at its best early in the season and it’s a given choice for the advanced tour which starts in beautiful Vålådalen and winds through spectacular nature. Demands decent physical capacity.
