Long Distance Running
Photo: Frida Berglund
If you’re a keen runner and wish to experience something new, we recommend trying some of the longest trails Åre has to offer. Below is a list of recommended trail running trails for long distance running in a mountainous environment where you’ll also experience magnificent views. Make sure to bring water, energy bars or whatever fills you up with new energy and extra layers of clothing. Also, tell someone what you’re doing, which trail you’ll be on and when you expect to be back.
Please note: The trails are laid with boardwalks on wetlands and other mounds that have a tendency to be wet. These are convenient for runners but also protect the ground from wear and tear. Stick to the boardwalks as best as you can and avoid running on wet trails (for example, after a rainfall). It’s also common to see reindeer on and around the trails. Please keep your distance, avoid disturbance and, if possible, choose a different route. Thank you!
Åreskutan runt
ELEVATION 970 m | DISTANCE 24,7 km
The trail around Mt Åreskutan offers a wonderful running adventure over several kilometres, with more descent than ascent. Take the lift up to Mörvikshummeln for a great starting point, then follow the route towards Stendalen, where you’ll encounter the steepest section of the trail. The path circles Västerskutan, offering views over Lake Kallsjön, before passing Bjelke’s mines. At the back of Åreskutan, the trail softens underfoot, but dries out again once you’ve rounded Blåsten. From there, it’s simply a matter of letting your legs carry you freely towards Björnen. Turn off towards Totthummeln and follow the Solstigen trail towards the village. From Fjällgården, it’s downhill all the way to the square – where you’ve certainly earned yourself an after-run drink.

Södra Ridvadsrundan
DISTANCE 14,7 km
Ridvadsrundan starts in Vallbo (with an alternative starting point at Fångåmon) and takes you through protected forest terrain, making it perfect for days with mixed weather. Instead of mountain peaks, the trail offers a grooved sandy beach by Lake Ottsjön. In the middle of the lake lies Sweden’s longest natural ford, Ridvadet. If the summer day is warm, we recommend trying to walk the full distance across the lake. The lakebed is made up of fine-grained sand — perfect for running. And why not take a swim while you’re there?

Begin your ascent in Duved, following the ski system, and prepare for several kilometres of running through untouched nature. Make sure to wear your best trail shoes — your feet are bound to get wet!
